Second Edition, 2005.Winners and Finalist Essays
One hundred and eighty-five works by authors from 25 countries were submitted to the second edition of the International Essay Competition “Thinking Against the Mainstream”. The jury, presided by Atilio Boron (Argentina) and made up of James Cockcroft (U.S.A.), Maria Ciavatta Franco (Brazil), Francois Houtart (Belgium) and Roberto Fernandez Retamar (Cuba) unanimously resolved to award:
Honourable Mention, out of competition to:
- “Imperial State, Imperialism and Empire” by James Petras of the U.S.A.
- “Towards a new Paradigm for the multi-national integration of Latin America and the Caribbean: focusing from a critical and participatory perspective” by Luis Suarez Salazar of Cuba.
At the same time, it was decided to award three prizes in this manner:

As announced in the bases of the Competition, the Cuban Book Institute will publish the final collection of essays and this will be presented during the next International Book Fair of Havana in 2006: together with the three prize-winning essays and the two honourable mentions, these will comprise the second volume of the collection, to be published by Social Sciences Press:

- “Marxism, Social Movements and Phenomenology” by Marco Antonio Perruso (Brazil)
- “Informational Goods and Capitalism” by Mariano Zukerfeld (Argentina)
- “Neo-liberal globalization and liberty of movement: conceptual and practical paradoxes” by Eugenio Martinez Enriquez (Cuba)
- “Where is the southern border of the U.S.?” by Maria de los Angeles Castaneda (Mexico)
- “The dust that brought this mud” by Joaquin G. Santana (Cuba)
- “Latin American Unity as a Response to Globalization” by Julio Salesses (Argentina)
- “Ten Mistaken Theses about the Regional Integration in Latin America. Elements from the social sciences for an alternative perspective” by Alfredo Falero (Uruguay)
- “Utopia, that classical idea” by Ana Maria Gonzalez (Argentina)
- “The workers take control: political implications of the self-administered corporations in Argentina” by Andres Eduardo Ruggeri (Argentina)
- “Myths and legends of contemporary economy” by Silvio Rafael Jova Argota (Cuba)
- “The challenge of the documentalists” by Miguel Mirra (Argentina)
